The Future of Teeth Cleaning: Airflow Dental Spa
What is Airflow Dental Spa?
AIRFLOW® Dental Spa is a revolutionary form of professional dental cleaning that projects a controlled stream of air, warm water and very fine powder onto the teeth to dislodge and remove plaque, discolouration and stains. This high-pressure stream cleans your teeth more effectively and more comfortably than the use of traditional ultrasonic cleaners.
AIRFLOW and Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) are part of an 8-step clinically proven protocol for cleaning and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. AIRFLOW is the result of years of clinical research by EMS, a leading manufacturing of medical devices based in Switzerland.
What is biofilm?
Biofilm is a layer of bacteria that grows in a matrix and sticks to the surface of the teeth and gums. Over time, it hardens into plaque and tartar, contributing to cavities, gum disease and other oral health issues.
Guided Biofilm Therapy is a technique that uses a disclosing agent to visibly highlight the biofilm present on the teeth. This allows our dentists to target and remove the biofilm with greater precision. The EMS AIRFLOW and GBT protocol work in conjunction to deliver a comprehensive, minimally invasive and comfortable cleaning experience.
How does Airflow and Guided Biofilm Therapy work?
Your dentist will place a purple dye onto your teeth to reveal any plaque and biofilm present in your mouth. The dye guides the dentist in removing the plaque so that only the biofilm is removed while the healthy parts of the teeth are preserved.
The dentist will then use the AIRFLOW machine to remove biofilm, plaque and stains. If you have hard calculus, your dentist may also need to use an ultrasonic scaler on your teeth. However, the use of AIRFLOW beforehand minimises the amount of time in which an ultrasonic is needed.
What are the benefits of Airflow Dental Spa?
Unlike traditional methods that rely on abrasive polishing pastes, AIRFLOW uses fine powder to effectively remove stains caused by coffee, tea and smoking, without damaging enamel or causing discomfort. The result is noticeably brighter and smoother teeth after just one session.
Conventional teeth cleaning methods use sharp instruments that scrape between the teeth and below the gumline. This can wear down the outer layer of the teeth and damage the soft gum tissue, leading to increased sensitivity. AIRFLOW offers a gentler alternative, ensuring the preservation of enamel and soft tissues while delivering a comprehensive clean.
AIRFLOW is also ideal for cleaning around orthodontic brackets, veneers and implants as it can remove biofilm in hard to reach areas while minimising damage to restorations.
